BCC Family Meeting - 10/28/2007

The Beaverton Christian Church Family meeting provided an opportunity for fellowship and praise and an update on the progress we have enjoyed with the implementation of the strategic plan presented in June of this year. Adam, Scott, and Janell provided an update on the changes that have been made in the children’s and youth ministries to help facilitate a time for families to worship together. The family meeting agenda included a financial update, introduced our newest elders, Matt and Gerry, our new finance director, Danielle, and time for Q & A for those in attendance.

This web site was introduced as well as a new forum for eCommunication with the BCC family. Please add your comments to this posting so we can know your thoughts and what you would like to see included in the next family meeting. Your comments will be viewed by others visiting this site. Thank you for attending the family meeting. We look forward to hearing from you.

Serving Christ and His Kingdom,

Jim B. - on behalf of the BCC Elders

(Someone's got to get this thing rolling, so it might as well be me. Here goes...)

I thought that everyone did a great job at last night's Family Gathering. (And I'm not just saying that, I really mean it.) What especially stood out to me at this church meeting was the unity of purpose (among both leaders and those in attendance) and the consistent clear commitment on the part the leadership to refining and revitalizing the ministry and impact of BCC.

While there was talk about financial processes, the emphasis was on good stewardship. While there was talk about new approaches of reaching and teaching people, the emphasis was on keeping God's Word central. And while there were some questions asked that did not have answers (yet), the leadership was upfront about that and promised to get back to people when the answer became evident.

That last point was probably the most "exciting" for me personally as I have always been somewhat concerned when leaders seem to have all the answers, primarily because I can't find a leader anywhere in the Bible who did, (except, of course, Jesus). Instead, the leaders in the Bible trusted God and the people trusted them. The people knew the direction, but not all the details, and that's the way I like it. The leadership team last night did a great job of giving us a solid feel and, I think, a confidence that we are moving in the right direction - in the direction God wants us to move together as a church.

I left feeling that it was pretty much the perfect "Philippians 3:13" meeting where "forgetting what is behind us" (as in "not dwelling on it") the focus was on "stretching" toward what is ahead of us.

Thank you for all of the work that went into the family meeting yesterday. I've been thinking about it and had a concern...

One of our 3 "purposes" as laid out last night is "To reach the valley and beyond for Christ...". Our ministry plan lays out "Entry", "Living Room", and "Kitchen" as a progression which I think will address the need for a discipleship process. However, I'm concerned that it seems to lack the "reaching" element that our purpose notes as well as the great commission. There was no "outreach" initiative eluded to or stated in the presentation. I think that the "what to do with people that come through our doors" is essential and extremely important, but I'm certain that we don't expect our "reeeeaching" to be primarily limited to those who walk through our doors or are somehow attracted to an event. We send people overseas and to disaster recovery - all very important, but then there's our neighborhood and city.

This is the job of each individual Christian, but how are we, at BCC going to put an emphasis and an expectation on this stated purpose?

You are right Bill, we didn't comment on how outreach is effected in the model. Good catch. To put it in the simpliest terms - the best outreach strategy is a well trainied, or at least grwoing disciple of Christ. Since we believe disciplehsip takes place best in small groups, our Life Groups should/will become a significant forum whereby disciples make other diciples i.e. reach out to the unsaved around them. This is also part of what Clark preached on last week in Eph 4 where he stated that the role of the pastor's and other church leaders is to prepare God's people for works of service. Being a well trainied or growing disciple who is prepared to be a good witness (and that is a work of service) will in turn provide the oppportunity for more disciples to be made.
